Im looking to upgrade my Toshiba L500-1ZP
    Upgrade includes 2 x 4GB DDR3 1066Mhz a SSD 500GB and changing out the current i3 330M with an i5 580M (tdp on both is 35W)

The only problem im walking against is Bios support for the i5 580M
Did Toshiba make 1 bios version for ALL L500 series laptops?
ifso can any one tell me if there is a toshiba l500 series laptop with a i5 580m cpu?

    Thanks in advanced?

not sure about the bios, but you might wanna make sure that the i3 die is the same as the i5 die (in shape and size). It should be because mobile i3/5/7's are basically all the same 2c4t with different clocks and cache amounts

Checked the die size both i3 330m and i5 580m size is 81mm2 so this shouldn't be a issue

i just ordered the cpu ill probably recieve the cpu tomorrow.

I dont know who changed the title of this thread but the original title was L500-1zp upgrade this isnt just a regular ram upgrade.

Well so far no luck i installed the i5 580m and the system wont boot looks like the bios isnt to happy with the new cpu
Going to double check if i missed something while reassembling the laptop.

this will probably only work with a costum bios we will see.

Okey i have a update i managed to speak with some one who knows a thing or 2 about bios
and he told me the i5 580m will not work on the L500-1zp laptops the cpu has a K0 stepping which isn't supported and adding microcode to the bios hasn't worked

so i managed to get a list of supported cpu's that will work on this specific laptop
(THIS LIST ONLY APPLIES TO LAPTOPS FROM TOSHIBA SATELLITE L500 SERIES WITH PART NUMBER PLSL9E)

CPUs with Arrandale core stepping C2 (CPUID:20652) are supported only:

    i3-330M (SLBMD)
    i3-350M (SLBPK)
    i5-430M (SLBPN)
    i5-520M (SLBNB)
    i5-540M (SLBPG)
    i7-620M (SLBPD)

Make sure the Part number of the cpu coincide with the list part numbers other part numbers will NOT work

Microcode already resides in the bios for these processors u might want to do a bios update before changing out the cpu.

I have ordered the following cpu i7-620M (SLBPD)
I will report back when i have it installed in the system.

if i'm honest, the only difference between an M-class i5 and M-class i3 is the cache amount, there's not much else to differentiate them, so it's probably not worth it

No the i5 580m and i7 620m also run at 3.3Ghz with turbo this results in almost 50% performance gains.

    the i3 330m only runs at 2.1Ghz

I will do a benchmark score with both cpu's ill post the difference.

    CPU-z benchmark

    i3-330m
    Singlethreaded: 707
    Multithread: 1303

    i7 -620m
    Singlethread 1100
    Multithread 2447

Big increase in performance noticeable on the laptop.
Start up time has shortened and starting up applications to.

Im happy with the results so far.
