The laptop is just over 1 year old and has been working ok until recently.

First symptoms were keyboard and touchpad not working at windows 8 login page. Pressing power to put laptop in sleep and pressing again often got them working.

This progressed to the keyboard and touchpad not working at random points whilst using the laptop.

Finally blanked the HDD and restored windows 8 alone, the laptop still BSOD's fairly frequently - refuses to install updates required for 8.1 and the keyboard and mouse often do not work even in the BIOS setup page. I have reseated the RAM and HDD.

Running out of ideas, the keyboard and touchpad do work and so I would assume that their connections are OK - but frequently they just stop.

    Any ideas appreciated?

    Thanks

    Hi

    > Finally blanked the HDD and restored windows 8 alone
I hope you created the Toshiba Recovery Disks before you formatted the system.
    Did you?

The Recovery disks would allow you to reset the notebook back to factory settings; to the same state like at the first day of purchase.

    > First symptoms were keyboard and touchpad not working at windows 8 login page. Pressing power to put laptop in sleep and pressing again often got them working.
Well, usually the keyboard problems are not related to system or software issues since the keyboard driver is part of the system and additional installation of some drivers is not really essential and necessary.
Therefore in most cases the keyboard issues could be causes by hardware problems.

However, after the usage of recovery disk and settings the notebook back to factory state, both parts (keyboard and touchpad) should work flawlessly.

    > the laptop still BSOD's fairly frequently - refuses to install updates required for 8.1
BSOD does not look very good. As mentioned above; settings the notebook back to factory settings should fix all system issues. In case the BSOD would appear even if the unit was set back to factory state, a hardware problem could be the reason for that.

I had also some problems with Win 8.1 update. The Win 8 system could not find the Win 8.1.
But the reason for that was simply. I had to install all Win 8 updates and had to update the system to latest state before trying to update to next higher level Win 8.1

So what to say: I would try to set the notebook back to factory settings using recovery disk.
Then I would try to get all automatic updates (some reboots were essential too). After that I would check the keyboard and touchpad functionality. In case the parts would not work, I would contact the service to check both parts.

I did skip a few of the interim steps,
I initially ran recovery from the recovery set - the system even crashed on the initial config of windows and did a memory dump.

I then rolled back to basic windows - and the effect was the same with the keyboard and touchpad not functional intermittently and a random BSOD.

I suspect hardware - but aside from RAM, HDD - I assume the only other possibilities are motherboard / processor. I have ran a memory test (windows) and a chkdsk - both clear.

Plugging in a USB mouse works when the touchpad and keyboard do not - which seems strange, as I may have suspected bad RAM or HDD - often the most likely faults?

I am not sure which bit of hardware to tackle first - could be a long process of elimination?

Thatís bad. Sounds like memory or motherboard related problem.

In case of HDD issues, the installation would not be possible. RAM problem could be possible even if the RAM has been checked. However, you are right: smells like mobo issue because of keyboard and touchpad issue.

As mentioned above: might be motherboard problem since the keyboard controller is an integrated part
