Portege R830/PT321E: Bios Update stops with "An error occurred while preparing the update environment..."

    Following message seems at first

BIOS Version: Current Ver. 3.40 -> Updated Ver. 3.70
EC Version: Current Ver. 1.30 -> Updated Ver. 1.50
Bios and EC should be updated

During the BIOS update seems following message:

+An error occurred while preparing the update environment. You have not given permission to execute the update.+

    My settings:
    - BitLocker is switched off.
    - No connection to a docking station
    - Windows 7 is installed
    - Boot mode is on? I guess it means:
"Closes all open programs, shut down windows, and then turns off your computer."

Any idea what the problem is?

    Hi ML

Maybe stupid question now but why do you want to update BIOS on this, I think, pretty new notebook model?
Have you noticed some issues or hardware problems?

    Hi

First of all the VAP (value added package) is necessary in order to update the BIOS.
If there is something wrong with VAP, the BIOS update might not be finished.

Therefore the first step should be the installation of VAP.

Additional the Toshiba European driver page provides also an BIOS v3.60
I think you should try to update to the v3.60 before trying the v3.70

But if you don’t have any serious problems with the notebook functionality, the BIOS update is not really needed.

Thanks for your support, friends of TOSHIBA’s Portege R830.

The BIOS update doesn't run under following conditions:
    - W I t h o u t & w i t h Value Added Package (Windows 7 - 64 Bit) = no update possible
    - BIOS370_EC150_WIN.exe runs as administrator = no update possible

    Reasons for BIOS Update?
    - To avoid any problems in the future
    - Maybe the fan runs quieter
    - Maybe Outlook 2010 works without foggy frozen screen?
    - Maybe Excel 2010 works without frozen menu after 2nd loaded sheet?
    - Maybe memory cards bigger than 64GB with exFat runs without any problems?
    - Today I have time to search a solution for BIOS update - later no time more.

    What else?
    - Any ideas why the BIOS update makes problems?

Did you try the v3.60 as I suggested above?

    Hello Tonny,

    Thanks for your reminder.
Sorry to say, the BIOS update doesn't run under following conditions:

    - No connection to a docking station. After restart and de-zipped files
    BIOS 3.60
    - With Version 3.60 = no update possible
    - BIOS360_EC140_WIN.exe runs as administrator = no update possible too
    - Error: Preparing to update was failed. You have not given permission to execute the update.
    BIOS 3.70
    - With Version 3.70 = no update possible
    - BIOS370_EC150_WIN.exe runs as administrator = no update possible too
    - An error occurred while preparing the update environment. You have not given permission to execute the update.

    - I checked the BIOS too - to switch off something like write protected BIOS. But I could not find this feature.

Any other helps to run the BIOS Update?

    Hi

The error: “You have not given permission to execute the update” means that you have no admin rights to perform the update.
But I assume your user account already use the admin rights.

Do you use the Toshiba preinstalled system?
    If not, do that!

You said that VAP update is not possible….
But you should not update the VAP but should install this package again.

Uninstall VAP, clean the registry using CCleaner.
Reboot the notebook, install the VAP, reboot once again, access the BIOS and set BIOS to default.
    Then follow with BIOS update.

To update the BIOS I recommend unzipping the BIOS package on the folder created on the desktop.
Then you will see an single file inside the package.
This file needs to be unzipped once again!
After that more files would appear in the folder… one of this files should be called Setup or BIOS update.
    This should be executed.

Do you use the Toshiba preinstalled system?
    - Toshiba preinstalled system include Toshiba SSD inside

Regarding VAP following steps are checked - but BIOS update was not possible (!)

    - Uninstall Value Added Package for Windows 7 - 64Bit (VAP)
    - Restart
    - Cleaned the registry with CCleaner
    - Restart again
    - New installation of Value Added Package for Windows 7 - 64Bit (VAP)
    - Unzipping the BIOS package
    - Folder "bios-20120209125153" created on the desktop
    - No connection to a docking station
    - Single BIOS360_EC140_WIN.exe file runs as administrator
    The same as before
    - Error: Preparing to update was failed. You have not given permission to execute the update.

2nd try - right mouse button on BIOS360_EC140_WIN.exe > activated "troubleshoot compatibility"
Checked different program compatibilities without any success
    No BIOS update possible under
    - Windows XP (Service Pack3)
    - Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)
    - Windows Server 2008 (Service Pack1)

    Any idea?
    - Why the permission is not given?

Guess what… try to enable the admin account by following this steps:
Star the DOS console by using the command CMD (in search type cmd)

Then type this: +net user administrator /active:yes+

Now you should log off your common user account.
Then you will see the admin account and your user account.
Log in the windows using the admin account.
Now you should try to update the BIOS once again…

    Thanks for your support, Tonny.
Based on your idea and without connection to a docking station I tried following steps:

    - Start > search:cmd > cmd.exe (click on right mouse button: run as administrator)
    Display shows:
    - C:\Windows\system32\
    Enter net user administrator /active:yes
    Display shows:
    - C:\Windows\system32\net user administrator /active:yes
    - The command completed successfully
    Now
    - Log off computer
    - After log off the screen shows (1) my own account and (2) “other user”
    - no button as administrator visible
It is the same view/screen which comes after each new start too.
It asks for user name and password

    What should I do?
Restart my own account and tried to update the BIOS without any success.
From my point of view my own account has the same rights as the administrator.
Updates, installation or de- installation of other programs works well.
Only the update of the BIOS is not possible.

    A) Either I try the find the solution for the not given permission
    B) or I try to find another solution like update from USB stick – if available?

    - Do you know another way to update the BIOS?
    - Or any suggestion to get back the permission and to improve my steps above?

Is an notebook recovery option for you?
Use recovery disk to set the system back to factory settings…
Then the BIOS update should be possible…
It’s not understandable for me why this does not work yet…

VAP needs to be applied first
    and then Intel AMT Software
and only after that - bios update
    Good Luck!

    Hello kostya29,

    (1) VAP needs to be applied first - done
    (2) and then Intel AMT Software

    Regarding (2)
Active Management Technology (AMT) from 02/05/12 was downloaded

    Then following message came:

This computer currently contains driver versions newer than the versions you are about to install.
    Intel® Management Engine Interface (9.2.0.1024)
    Intel® Active Management Technology – SQL (7.1.21.1134)

From my point of view Toshiba’s page offers an old version.
    On this point I stopped.

    What do you recommend?

The message is clear enough: the newer version of Intel AMT is already installed.
You don’t need to update the driver.
The Toshiba driver page does not provide always the newest drivers from 3rd party manufacturers especially if the notebook is a little bit older. In this case it’s recommended to use the driver from Intel page

    Regarding the BIOS update:
You have to ensure that VAP is installed and that you have admin privileges.
You have to ensure that your notebook is connected to main, battery is charged and no other software is running in the background!

is it possible to install the BIOS update via LINUX (like Ubuntu)?
If yes, could you kindly provide the link?

No, Toshiba Europe download page provides only “win-based” BIOS which means that you need Windows system in order to start the BIOS update.

To start the BIOS update procedure outside the Windows system you would need an traditional BIOS version which is not available for download.

It is important to stress "Toshiba Europe".

There are other Toshiba support centers around the web - e.g. at http://support.toshiba.com/support/home (USA)

These support centers sometimes have additional updates (earlier).
