    Hi All

I am new to this forum. I have been given a Toshiba Satellite L500 to attempt to repair and the fault is that the laptop was shutdown normally and now will not turn on.

I have checked the power adapter which is giving out 19.25v. I have stripped the laptop down to motherboard level and have checked where the DC jack plug is soldered to the motherboard and that also reads 19.25v with the adapter plugged in. Can anyone suggest a possible cause.

My initial thoughts are a motherboard failure but any other ideas are very welcome.

Your description is OK but we still don’t know some facts.

When notebook is connected to AC power supply is power LED on notebook ON or not?
    Is battery LED on (charging)?

On this virtual way we can just speculate what the problem can be but if there is no power supply there must be problem with power supply electronic and, I’m afraid, you need some professional help with this.

    Hi Howarth

Thanks for your reply. The LED light on the front of the laptop does not come on when the power adapter is plugged in. I can't check if the battery is charging as I can't get the laptop to turn on. I agree with you that there most be a problem with the power supply circuit.

You don’t need to turn on the unit to check this…
If the AC adaptor would be ok, then the power LED should flash, additionally the battery LED should be green or orange depending on the battery status.

I think your motherboard is affected since the unit should power up with inserted battery

    Hi Tonny

Still no lights whatsoever on the front of the laptop and still won't turn on. I am fairly certain this is a motherboard problem. Can you suggest the best place to obtain a replacement.

    Hi

If its motherboard problem then a fix would be really a costly affair…
New motherboard cost between 250-350 €

However, all new compatible notebook parts can be ordered from an Toshiba ASP (authorized service partner) in your country.
You can also ask these guys for a cost estimate

    Hi

Thanks for the feedback. I can.t see any other reason for the laptop not turning on. As you say this would a a very expensive repair and probably not cost effective.

In case motherboard would be faulty… yes…

But we can only assume that mobo is faulty… maybe other part is affected and maybe it would be worth to replace such part… but this requires and hardware check….

    Hi

I am not sure what other component would stop the laptop from turning on. I could check the hard drive by putting it in a caddy and checking it. Would a memory or CPU failure stop it fromt turning on. The power is reaching the motherboard so I am not sure what other component could be faulty.

Surely… memory should be tested firstly because it’s much easier to replace the memory as the CPU.

    Hi

Unfortunately I was unable to get the laptop to power up to enable me to run any memory checks or hard drive checks.

Notebook should power on even if the HDD is faulty...
But the notebook would not power ON if memory module is faulty.
Therefore the notebook should be tested using *new* _good tested_ modules...

    HI PauPau

Thanks for your reply. I will obtain compatible memory and try it in the laptop. Would defective memory also stop the laptop charge light on the front of the machine from coming on.

Isn’t better to visit an technician downtown who could test this before purchasing a new modules???

No, the power indicator should flashes even if the modules or slots would be faulty.
