Recently I went into my laptops 'synaptics pointing device settings and checked the box:
'disable internal pointing device when external USB device is attached'

I then later unchecked the box but the trackpad continued to be disabled, despite the mouse properties window saying that the trackpad was working properly.

    Hi

try the key combination FN + F9.
This would enable and disable the touchpad.

Does this help you to enable the touchpad?

    Sadly no.

I have tried updating the drivers through device manager in the control panel, but I am already up-to-date.

I think the touchpad software is installed in control panel -> software
Here you should uninstall the Synaptic touchpad driver (or Alps) and then reboot the notebook. Clean the registry using the CCLeaner and after new reboot install the touchpad driver once again.

Additionally it would be worth to check the BIOS settings.
As far as I know the touchpad (pointing device) could be enabled and disabled in BIOS too.

EDIT: Resetting BIOS to defaults has re-enabled the trackpad.
