I have an old Satellite A100-811 with Windows XP SP3. It has 1 GB memory (2x512). I want to upgrade the memory. What should I do?

    1. Put another 2GB memory so the total is 2.5Gb (will i have any problems for using two types of memory 512Mb and 2 Gb ?)

    2. Put 2x1 Gb total 2 Gb (for better combatibility?)

    3. Put 2x2 Gb . But will i have the full 4Gb memory or just 3Gb because of Win Xp limitations of memory?

Do I need any BIOS update for this?

Thanks in advance for any info!

    Hi skga100,

The maximum RAM capacity of Satellite A100-811 is 4GB. That means you can install 2GB in each slot.

Usually for Windows XP 2GB is enough but I you want to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7, you should think about 3 or 4GBÖ

In your case I would buy one 2GB memory module. So you are on the safely side.
Why? If you want to install Vista or Windows 7 later, you can buy a second memory module and keep your 2GB module. Thatís the easiest way. :)

And no, BIOS update is not necessary.

    Thanks for the reply!

Now i have a new problem

crucial.com suggests that ddr2 667mhz memory are suitable for a100-811
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Satellite%20A100-811

kingston suggests that ddr2 533 are suitable for my computer
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=33110&mfr=Toshiba&model=Satel lite+A100&search_type=&root=gr&LinkBack=http%3A%2F %2Fwww.kingston.com%2Fgrroot&Sys=33110-Toshiba-Satellite+A100-811&distributor=0&submit1=Search

    Toshiba says ddr2 533

So its better to go with kingston memory? I would have 2gb ddr2 533Mhz + 512Mb ddr2 533 mhz ....But for 26euros maybe its better to install the second module of 2gb even if it only recognises 3 or 3.5gb?

    Hi skga100,

I would take the Kingston module because they make high quality products and many users here used Kingston RAM for upgrading and there were no problems. :)
Also DDR2 533 MHz is fast enough, higher speeds are not supported and will also run on 533 MHz.

As I already wrote: If you have XP, 2GB is more than enough! Also for Vista and Windows 7 itís ok but not best performance. Therefore I would recommend 3 or 4GB (only 64bit supports 4GB!!!).
So if you remain XP, one 2GB is really enough!
