I had to replace the hard disk on my A300 PSAJ4E and when I reloaded Vista 32 and all the Toshiba hardware drivers all went OK except for the Chicony webcam install.

The side menu is there but it won't work, giving a "webcam driver open fail. please restart camera or computer" error.

I updated the Bios to 4.20
I first used the original Toshiba download, webcam-20080428125023 driver (V1.07.175).
I tried it with "the lid 3/4 closed".
I searched everywhere and read of dozens of similar problems. I tried a few, even editing the setup ini. Nothing helps.
I've even tried the XP drivers (V1.7.144.0611), the 32bit and 64bit versions and even a gateway driver. Nothing seems to work for this cam.

    What now?

I also now get "the required section was not found in the INF" when I try to uninstall and reinstall the driver through device manager.
    I have the choice of
    6.198.1.0
    6.2.208.424
    6.2.238.1217
    all giving the same error...

Me too. See my thread of a couple of days ago.
I have given up. I have wasted hours and hours trying to get the webcam driver to work.
Next week I am going to buy an external webcam.
There are many complaints about this in various forums, I think it is time someone took responsibility.
Sorry that I could not be positive and help you.

Syntax, the "answers" you suggest are already covered in my original question, so nice try but obviously no good for me!

I have already read anything pertaining to my problem in this and other forums, I came here hoping for an expert to suggest something new and original...

This cam works great under Linux with Cheese, so I guess it's not a firmware or hardware problem, it's a Toshiba driver problem.

Anybody have anything more to offer me please??

After a lot of messing in INF files *I have fixed it.*

Simply did file searches for a " *.INF " file in any chicony folder on the drive, found a few and added
(open square bracket) ClassInstall32 (close square bracket)
to the bottom of them all, then I used device manager to uninstall the (broken) chicony webcam, rebooted and let it reinstall...

All working (at least, as well as before which was never great but better than being broken).

There is no hardware issue, it is simply a badly written installer for the driver contained in the Camera Assistant software..

    Note to Toshiba:
Thanks but I'll not be buying another product from you as your software implementation is sloppy to say the least.

Thank you for your feedback. It is very interesting info.
Anyway, it is hard to believe that Toshiba driver is badly written. Since two years I have Satellite A300-1LI. One year Iíve used it with recovery image and since one year I use my own Win7 32bit OS.

I use cam often with Skype and MSN and until now I have never had any problems with cam or Camera assistant software. Maybe Iím simply a lucky guy. ;)

    Bye

    I also added

    [ClassInstall32]

    to
    C:/Vista/Program Files/Camera Assistant Software for Toshiba/Driver/32bit/casflr.inf

and this seems to be the one that did the trick.
