Maybe it sounds stupid now but Toshiba supports own products only. With other words Toshiba must offer support for hardware and preinstalled software.

If you use third part software and there is some problem you should contact software company at first to see what they will say about it.
Toshiba has nothing to do with Centos 5.3 and virtual machine box. You can call Toshiba hotline and ask but I am 100% sure you will get the same answer.

    DrLamp, you missed the question.

It is a valid concern whether Toshiba enables in the BIOS the Intel-VT (VMX) feature that your CPU may have.
A few years ago there were manufacturers that did not bother to provide updates BIOS firmware updates and
customers who bought those more expensive laptops could not use hardware virtualisation.

Intel-VT (VMX) is a generic feature that any operating system such as Centos, Ubuntu Linux, Fedora Linux can utilise.

I have no clue what's the case with Toshiba. If someone already has a Toshiba laptop, there is a process to verify whether VMX is on or out.

Intel Virtualization technology depends on the CPU.
If the CPU supports VT then there should be an option in BIOS which would allows you to enable or to disable this feature.
So take a look into the BIOS settings.

If the CPU does not support this, then the option would not be available…

I’m not missed the question. I think the question was not formulated on the right way.
Maybe the question should be as follow:
Is Virtual PC, Virtual Machine supported on my Satellite L500 notebook model?

For instance, on my Satellite I have option in BIOS > “Virtualization Technology” and only one option is available there: “VT-X Only”.

Friend of mine has Satellite L500-10W and GM45 chipset. I know for sure that Intel VT is not supported on this notebook model.

You are right. Intel-VT is a generic feature but if the hardware don't support this there is nothing to do about it.

People can find if their CPU supports Intel-VT from intel.com, or in some cases they may
know already simply by reading the CPU model ranges (Txxxx or iX models).

The issue with manufacturers is that they often omit the option in the BIOS to enable Intel-VT.
I do not know what's the trend with Toshiba laptops. If you google on this, you can find
many examples of laptop manufacturers that simply are not concerned by this feature.

    For example, with Sony,

    With Acer,

I agree with you tarafog. I presume most notebooks are used for standard stuff like internet, mails and other “every day” activities and this can be the reason why notebook manufacturers are not concerned about all this.
Other way, we should not forget that Toshiba offers business notebooks models and fact is that all of them have Intel-VT option available. So maybe Toshiba marketing devision has made decision to support business models only. Who knows?

Anyway I must also say that it is nice to have you here in this forum especially in Linux section.
Many people try to use Linux on Toshiba notebooks but there are so many problems with all this.

Hopefully you can help a little bit.

Sorry, it´s an old thread but still valid to me.
Does it mean, the VT-X option would be available but not yet visible ?
Satellite A200-29L: Can't see the VT-X option in BIOS. Is the Firmware so intelligent, that this option would be available after replacing the current T5550 CPU with an VT-X supported CPU ?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi

What makes you come the conclusion that the whole list of families all support virtualization?

That is a very bold assumption since the families has a vast number of sub-model, each having individual firmware with different features.
Portégé, Satellite Pro's and Tecra's are Business models, and as discussed previously, will probably support virtualization in the firmware.
Most of the others are consumer models where virtualization may not be a high-priority feature.
So although a CPU may support the feature, the firmware may not.

See the note in the end of the page which you linked and copied text from:

"NOTE: If your BIOS does not provide virtualization technology as an option, this feature is not supported on your computer model."

In the case of A200, I can't tell if it will support virtualization with another CPU. But is sounds like an expensive experiment to me and I would not bet any money on it.

    BR Tom
