    Hello

I have a Satellite A100-044, I would like to upgrade my HDD from the 120GB to a bigger one (either 250GB or 320GB).

Would a 7200rpm work on it? it seems on compatibility websites they only show 5400rpm ones, I would like to set up my laptop for music recording/mastering so want a fast machine, I dont really mind whether it consumes more battery power...

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    Pierre

    Hi!

Of course you can exchange the HDD with a faster model that uses 7200rpm. But as you say it need a little bit more battery power. The new HDD should be a little bit faster, especially the access time should be lower.

250GB or 320GB should be possible; you need a HDD with SATA interface.

I hope I could help you a little bit.

    Bye

    Hello Pierre

I agree with Lars. HDD upgrade is possible. I cannot imagine you will notice radical difference in HDD access speed but if you want to have it, it is OK.
What can be also interesting is heat.
I can imagine this HDD will produce more heat and you will feel it when you touch your notebook on place where the HDD is placed.

Thanks guys for such a fast answer!

I know about the heat... hoping it won't be that different.

The 7200RPM seem to be a tiny bit more expensive but not drastically, are there any other factors to consider? I am going for a 16Mb cache, do I need to update the BIOS to make this upgrade?

    Thanks a lot,
    Pierre

    Hi!

No, you donít need to update the BIOS. The Cache is placed on the HDD and will be automatically used due the HDD. So the bigger cache will be used automatically.

Have fun with the new HDD! :)

    Bye

It will be nice if you can post short report about upgrade describing your personal opinion about it.

Such information is very useful for other Satellite A100 owners.
Let us know which HDD will be inside.

Depending on the drive, a 7200RPM drive may get hotter than a 5400RPM drive. So to avoid overheating issues, 5400PRM may be a wiser choice.
