I've recently got a Toshiba laptop with Vista ready installed, but what happens if, at some point in the future, I need to reformat?
How do I reinstall Vista without a disc?

I think you haven’t looked in the user manual. Do this, because there you can find a lot of informations how to reinstall Windows Vista.

However, the Toshiba notebook with Vista have a HDD Recovery function. On the second partition is a folder called “HDDRecovery”. It contains the image of the factory settings and so you can reinstall the notebook without CD/DVD.

Furthermore you can also burn the recovery disks with the Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator and you should do this too. If have a faulty HDD or something else you will need this disk and otherwise you must pay for it.

Normally you should get the recovery reminder message on your notebook and this contains also interesting informations:

    +Important INFORMATION+

+your system is equipped with hard disk recovery system. if you need to repair+
+your computer by restoring it to original factory state, you can do it directly+
+from harddisk (press F8 when you boot your computer, choose "Repair your computer"+
+and follow the menue instructions) or create a bootable Recovery Disc Medium for this purpose.+

+Toshiba recommends you to create Recovery Disc Medium using the "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator" to ensure+
+hat you are able to restore your computer to the original factory installed state, even if your computer+

    Nice posting by Raver.

Anyway, you have two possibilities. You can install Vista again using HDD recovery mode (F8 > Repair my computer) and it will work if nothing is changed in “factory settings”. That means the partitions cannot be modified and “HDDRecovery” folder on second partition must be there all the time.

You can also install Vista using created Vista recovery DVD. Please do this. It can happen that for some unknown reason preinstalled image on second partition will be damaged and not usable for installation. If you want to be on safe side create recovery media. Then you can do what you want.

    One more thing:

When you use HDD recovery installation (F8) only first partition C will be formatted. That means all saved data on second partition will be still there. When you use recovery DVD the whole HDD will be deleted and all your data will be gone.

    Bye and good luck!
