    Dear Sir

    on my Tecra M2 bought in december 2004, configur 1,8 Ghz single core pentium M mobile, one can find a sicker of windows wich says : xp professional 1-2 CPU : what do they mean by '1-2 CPU'?

    Can i upgrade the processor to a faster one?

    Hi DrWeekx,

    The "1-2 CPU" label means that the Windows license is for a computer that runs with either 1 processor or 2 separate processors on one board (not to be confused with a dual core processor, which is still classed as 1 CPU as it is packaged on a single chip).

    This second option is not very common, but Microsoft designed the license to look that way just to cover the possibility. It basically means that you can only use the Windows serial number for one computer.

    As for changing the processor, most laptops have their CPU soldered directly onto the main circuit board, not in a holder like a desktop PC, to save on space and weight. In theory, it could be removed and replaced but in practice it is so easy to damage the board that it is generally neither recommended nor practiced.
