    I own a Satellite P20-842 Notebook.
I received a Product recovery DVD with it(2 DVDs)
I wish to format the Harddisk!
When i try to use the DVD, i get a message "starting windows 98"
some 900ish files get copied and then NOTHING!!! i restart and i get a windows XP stiarting message...
    My questions
    1) how do i use the DVD to format the harddisk!
    2) when i bought this notebook, it had windows XP preinstalled... so where does windows 98 come into picture??

I need to format my drive ASAP as my comp keeps crashing....
    I need HELP!!!!!! ASAP!!

    Hi

Donít be afraid. Everything is ok.
The Recovery CD contains the ghost image files and it uses Windows 98 MS-Based system files for booting from CD.
This is usual that the Win98 message appears during the booting.
Furthermore the recovery CD formats and deletes the HDD automatically.
You have only to boot from this CD and you have to select the standard mode.

In such case the recovery CD will erase the HDD completely.

    Hi

Last year I have sold my P20-303 after two years of usage. I have recovered the unit many times without any problems. This Win98 should not confuse you at all. I donít know why is this written there but donít worry about that.

After starting the recovery procedure and copying of those Ď900ish filesí the recovery menu should be shown. When you said nothing is there maybe some error message or just black screen?

To use recovery CD please do the follow:
    1. put recovery CD number 1 into CD/DVD drive while the unit is OFF
    2. press power button and immediately keep down C button to force CD/DVD drive to start
    3. the Win98 message will be shown and some of files will be listed (white symbols on black background Ė like under MS-DOS mode)
    4. after few seconds the recovery menu should be shown
    - 1 Standard recovery mode
    - 2 Expert recovery mode
    - Exit

If there is no success I presume there is some problem with recovery CD. According your posting HDD works well.

How about installation from the original Microsoft Windows CD?
It would be very interesting to know if this installation will also hang

No, you didnít mention it! You had a HDD crash? Well possibly the new is not properly formatted or corrupt? You could try to put it out and test it as a external one. You know with USB connection.

But what do you mean with you didnít have the Toshiba recovery CD? Did you use the right and original recovery CD from Toshiba? Sorry but your suggestions are very tricky!

You have to use the Recovery CD which was made especially for this notebook. Other recovery CD will not work!
As far as I know the product key will not work on different WinXP versions.
Possibly Microsoft has stepped this key as a invalid one.

    well...
this windows XP verson is from a CD.. microsoft original or pirated.. i wouldnt know :(
So i m thinking... shud i format the HDD from the format option in windows?
if i do that, will i be able to reinstall windows from the Toshiba DVD? if not i'd be in a mess :(
And i need to format this thing...my system is too unstable...cos i cant even do a virus scan now, it makes my comp switch off automatically! ( i think my list or woes with this notebook are increasing with each messsage! :()

The original Microsoft Windows CD contains the option to format the HDD!
So if itís possible to install the OS from the Microsoft CD so you can do it.
Then you can download the Toshiba drivers and utilities from the Toshiba site and install it.

The other possibility is to use the Windows CD only for the formatting and then to use the Recovery CD for the OS installation.

The notebook could shuts down automatically because of the overheating.
I think the notebook is a little bit older. Am I right? So possibly the dust and debris prevent the properly cooling. So maybe a cleaning could help.

No, you cannot format the OS partition if the OS is running!
So you have to format it using the OS on the CD

I think you have not enough tools and utilities for testing and to locate the malfunction.
So ask someone with more experience or a technician for the help.
