I have an NB 100 netbook. At page 3-9 in the manual, "System recovery options" , it is stated that the external optical drive needs to "support the Product Recovery media".

What exactly does this mean?
Will any external dvd work for recovery or is only Toshiba external dvds supported?

Hi

I would recommend using an external CD/DVD drive which is recommended by Toshiba and 100% compatible with your NB100.
Such external CD/DVD drive (USB plug) can be ordered from the Toshiba authorized service partner in your country.

Hi, thanks for your reply

The external USB dvds I have found from Toshiba,

http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/individualOptions.do?service=UK&OPTION_ID=114946&toshibaShop=reseller&selCategory=4699

and

http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/individualOptions.do?service=UK&OPTION_ID=110263&toshibaShop=true&selCategory=4699

are too expensive for me (for the price of 2 dvds you can almost buy a new NB100!). Will external USB dvds from other manufacturers (e.g. Samsung, Iomega) work? I guess it is the possibility to boot from the drive that is critical, is this correct?

Is it possible to transfer the recovery dvd to a usb stick, using antoher computer, and do the recovery from the usb stick instead? The NB100 is able to boot from USB sticks.

You don't have to buy any special Toshiba DVD drives.

99,999999% of modern external USB drives will work with the NB100.

(I use the external USB XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive from Microsoft with the NB100 and it works like a charm!)

Buying a Toshiba DVD rom is only a good idea if you are rich, ANY external CD or DVD rom will work fine, I have used a cheap old external Freecom CD-rom, a mini DVD writer bought off Ebay and an expensive external 16X DVD litescribe writer. All worked perfectly.

Thanks Eiermann and d123

Just one more question to make it clear. Have you actually tried using the +*Recovery DVD*+ together with your externel drives? Do really all externel dvds support +*booting*+ ?

yes, they all work fine with the Recovery disk, all you have to remember to do is change the boot order in the bios, move ext. usb to the top of the list before trying to boot from the ext. drive.
